*Insight refers to a person’s awareness that they are experiencing a mental illness. In some brain diseases, this awareness is impaired or entirely absent due to a symptom called anosognosia—a neurological barrier that prevents the person from recognizing they are unwell. Once lost, insight can be difficult or impossible to regain.
